Important information you should know

watch out for caterpillars and bugs in corn and soybeans

They suggest following the evolution of these larval stage pests in these crops in the field during the next few days.

uring the last pest report made by the site Infobicho, last Monday, October 31, Mr. Maximiliano Spinollo reported that the captures of nocturnal lepidoptera in light traps showed some dynamics a few days ago, when temperatures were above 30°.

Among the species collected were: true military caterpillar (Pseudaletia adultera), threshing caterpillar (Faronta albilinea) and measuring caterpillar (Rachiplusia nu).

"It is suggested to follow the evolution of these larval stage pests in the field during the next few days," recommended the Infobicho site.

Brown bugs in corn (Dichelops furcatus)

After the last rains, the planting of early corn, which could not be carried out in September due to drought, began to a great extent.

In this situation, we should not forget the possible presence of brown stubble bugs, which could cause significant damage to the corn crop if they are not controlled in time.

This pest should be monitored taking into account that it causes attacks during the first weeks of emergence of corn plants, the bites of these insects cause symptoms such as asymmetric perforations in the leaves, appearance of tillers, and abnormal growth of the plant. Damage thresholds taken from southern Brazil report 1 bug/m2.

Boller caterpillar (Helicoverpa gelotopoeon) in soybeans

During November, the first soybean fields in the region will be established and could be attacked by bolillera caterpillar, as happened at the beginning of some past seasons.

Monitoring will be an essential tool at that time, together with the data provided by the light trap surveys.

It is essential to monitor soybean crops in vegetative stages, taking into account that these pests cause damage with low percentages of presence in the field and that due to their concealment inside the leaves, their control is difficult.

The control of Helicoverpa may require specific insecticides and in some cases the use of higher doses.
