Important information you should know

This giant wasp is actually a harmless moth in disguise

Wasps are one of the most repulsive insects. Although their black and yellow colors may be attractive, their painful sting causes many people to panic when they see one of these insects nearby. However, it is possible that all this time they have been around totally harmless moths.

The European hornet moth is known to completely mimic the appearance of giant wasps with a defense mechanism that manages to avoid attack by predators.

Its appearance, with a lacy body, transparent wings and characteristic colors, confuses humans at first glance. Even up close, it is difficult to distinguish this moth from a spotter. In addition, it also mimics their irregular flight so that no other animal comes close enough to see the difference.

All this happens by a mechanism called Batesian mimicry by which certain species evolve until they end up being identical to other more dangerous animals but without being able to exert the same damage.

In this case, the most important difference is that the moth has no stinger and cannot bite. It poses a threat to poplar trees, as they feed on their wood and deposit their larvae there.

This insect is found throughout Europe and parts of the Middle East, and has recently been introduced into North America as well.
